In response to the continued demand for outsourced IT infrastructure, Telx announced Thursday it will add to its existing New Jersey data center portfolio by building a purpose-built facility next to its existing Clifton data center.
It’s the first time Telx is building fresh — the company has always used existing building for its centers.
“It’s complimentary to our entire portfolio. We are on the campus today working with the current development team, Mountain Development, which owns the existing facility,” said Eric Shepcaro, CEO of Telx. “It was an existing warehouse that was on the campus that was proximate and can leverage the utilities, the power distribution, so jointly, we decided to take down that warehouse and put up this new three-story building.”
The new facility will be completed by the end of 2012, and will be built to LEED gold-plus standards, as well as accommodate Telx’s customers security needs. LEED is the leadership in energy and environmental design designation awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. The building will add 215,000 square feet of space, 100,000 of which will be customizable co-location space for multiple tenants.
“We see a lot of outsourcing requirements from all verticals in the New York metro area … at the same time we’re seeing global customers that are looking for U.S. deployments close to or in the New York metro area,” Shepcaro said. “It’s not just going to be New York/New Jersey customers that come into this facility — we see real opportunities from global (companies) into the U.S. that need a data center footprint here.”
Shepcaro said the company is in the process of working with the Economic Development Authority to apply for incentives for the project, and that the board of directors of Telx has found value in New Jersey “from an investment perspective.”
The new facility will create 20 permanent jobs, and the construction process should add dozens of contract jobs to the Clifton area, he said.
